Great Year for a Great God on a Great Mission
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained. (Philippians 3:12-16)
New Years has come and gone but Paul’s words are no less true two thousand years after they were written than the very moment he was inspired to write them. As a follower of Jesus and the better way He offers, I live in an ‘already but not yet’ existence. My future and eternity are secured in heaven (Eph.2), not because of me but because of Him. So my task is simply to set in motion the transforming work of the Holy Spirit inside of me to the work and mission in front me.
It would be an exhausting proposition to attempt to work towards the goal of acceptance when the goal I should be working towards is seeing Jesus do incredible work through my life and the lives of those around me. I want to live for Jesus with total abandon and be the kind of man, husband, father and pastor that lives life in a way where Jesus has to show up or it won’t work.
The last year has had some incredible challenges and some awesome progress but like Paul challenges the Philippian church I want to let my focus to be on the mission that God has before me now. I don’t want to be like that guy who lives all his life fantasizing about a High School football season or the person who has pinned a specific job or pursuit as my historical success.
